Quick answer
How do you make a 3D model from text with AI?
Type a description of the object into a text-to-3D generator such as Vi3W: what it is, its shape, material and style. The AI generates a textured 3D mesh with PBR materials, retopologises it automatically, and lets you export it as glTF, FBX or OBJ for Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine or the web, all from the browser.
How it works
Text to 3D, in 3 steps.
- 1
Write the prompt
Name the object first, then add shape, material and style: "a wooden treasure chest with iron bands, hand-painted stylised look". One object per prompt works best.
- 2
Generate and iterate
Vi3W turns the prompt into a textured mesh in the browser editor and retopologises it. If it is not right, change the wording and run it again.
- 3
Export
Download glTF, GLB, FBX or OBJ and drop it into Unity, Unreal Engine 5, Godot, Three.js or Blender.
Export formats
Download your models in industry-standard formats.
GLB / glTF
Best for web, Godot, Three.js and Blender
FBX
For Unity, Unreal Engine and DCC tools
OBJ
Geometry only (PBR maps are lost)
USDZ

What this doesn’t do
Text is the loosest way to describe a shape. "A sci-fi crate" can come back in a hundred valid forms, so expect to iterate, or start from a sketch when you already know the silhouette you want.
- One object per prompt. Vi3W does not build multi-object scenes or full environments from one description.
- Static meshes only. No rigging, no animation.
- A starting point for hero assets. For the main character of a game, treat the result as a strong first draft and finish it in Blender or Maya.
Frequently asked questions
Can Chatgpt do 3D modeling?
Only indirectly. ChatGPT is a language model, so it cannot produce a textured mesh file on its own. It can write code that builds geometry, such as an OpenSCAD file or a Blender Python script, and it can write good prompts. For an actual model to export, use a dedicated text-to-3D generator.
What is the best 3D AI tool?
There is no single best tool. It depends on your input and where the model ends up. Compare tools on what they export rather than how their renders look: mesh topology, UV layout, texture quality and file formats. If you work from sketches as well as text, and need assets for a game engine or the web, Vi3W is built for exactly that workflow.
Is there a free AI 3D model maker available?
Yes. Vi3W has a free tier with a monthly allowance of credits for generating 3D models from text, sketches or images, and it runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install. Most AI 3D generators work this way: a free allowance to try them, with paid plans for regular use.
Which AI can make 3D models for free?
Several AI 3D generators offer free tiers, including Vi3W, which gives you monthly credits for text-, sketch- and image-to-3D. Before choosing one, check three things the free plan might limit: the export formats you get, whether outputs are licensed for commercial use, and how many generations the allowance actually covers.
