Quick answer

How do you turn an image into a 3D model?

Upload a single photo or reference image to an image-to-3D generator such as Vi3W. It estimates the object's shape and depth, generates a textured 3D mesh with PBR materials, retopologises it, and exports it as glTF, FBX or OBJ. A clear, well-lit image of one object on a plain background gives the most reliable result.

How it works

Image to 3D, in 3 steps.

  1. 1

    Pick a clear image

A product shot, a photo of a prop, concept art or a render. One object, fully in frame, evenly lit. Busy backgrounds and heavy shadows give the generator more to misread.

  2. 2

    Generate in the browser

Upload it to the Vi3W editor. The image becomes a textured mesh, and automatic retopology rebuilds the dense first pass into a lighter model.

  3. 3

    Export and use it

Download glTF, GLB, FBX or OBJ and bring it into Blender, Unity, Unreal Engine 5, Godot or a Three.js scene.

Export formats

Download your models in industry-standard formats.

  • GLB / glTF

Best for web, Godot, Three.js and Blender

  • FBX

For Unity, Unreal Engine and DCC tools

  • OBJ

Geometry only (PBR maps are lost)

  • USDZ

What this doesn’t do

One photo shows one side of an object. Vi3W infers the rest, so hidden details such as the back of a chair or the inside of a bag are its best guess, not a measurement. If accuracy matters, use a reference that shows the object from the angle you care about most.

  • Not a 3D scanner. Vi3W does not reconstruct an object from dozens of photos the way photogrammetry does. If you need a measured, true-to-life copy of a real object, use a scanning app.
  • Static meshes only. No rigging and no animation.
  • One object at a time. A photo of a whole room will not come back as a room full of separate, usable assets.

Frequently asked questions

Can ChatGPT convert image to 3D model?

Not by itself. ChatGPT can describe an image, write a detailed prompt, or write code such as a Blender Python or OpenSCAD script that builds simple geometry, but it does not output a textured mesh file from a photo. For that you need a dedicated image-to-3D generator. ChatGPT is still useful upstream, for example to clean up the description of what you want.

Is there a free way to convert an image to 3D?

Yes. Vi3W's free tier includes a monthly allowance of credits that you can spend on image-to-3D generations and export as glTF, FBX or OBJ. Free options also exist outside AI generators: Blender is free and lets you model over an image by hand, and some phone scanning apps offer free tiers for photographing real objects.

What is the Nano Banana 3D model?

"Nano Banana" is the nickname for Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model. The viral "3D figurine" trend uses it to turn a photo into a picture of a collectible figure on a stand. That result is an image, not a 3D model. You cannot rotate it, export it or 3D print it. To get an actual mesh, run the image through an image-to-3D generator.

How do I create a 3D image of myself?

Decide which kind of "3D" you want. For a stylised picture of yourself as a figurine, an image model like Nano Banana is enough. For a real 3D model you can rotate or print, either scan yourself with a photogrammetry app, which gives the most accurate likeness, or generate a model from a photo with an image-to-3D tool, which is faster but interprets rather than measures.
