Turn a drawing or picture into a Roblox 3D model

Turn a sketch, drawing or photo into a Roblox 3D model: what makes a good input image, the generate-reduce-import workflow, and tracing flat shapes.

Quick answer

How do you turn a drawing into a Roblox model?

Use an image-to-3D generator. Upload a clear drawing or photo of a single object, ideally at a three-quarter angle on a plain background. Generate a textured mesh, reduce it well under Roblox's 20,000-triangle limit with retopology, export .glb, .fbx or .obj, and bring it into Studio with File ⟩ Import.

Why start from a drawing

Words are imprecise about shape. "A sword with a curved blade" could be a hundred different swords. A drawing pins down the silhouette, the proportions and where the details sit. Your own sketch is also the most reliable way to get an asset that looks like nobody else's. The trade-offs between inputs are in text vs image vs sketch to 3D.

Two very different jobs

Flat shapes with thickness, such as logos, signs and island outlines, don't need AI. Trace the image to SVG, import the curves into Blender, convert them to a mesh and extrude.

Full 3D objects need the generator to infer what you didn't draw: depth, the sides, the back. That's what image-to-3D and sketch-to-3D generators do.

What makes a good input

  • One object, fully in frame. Crop out everything else.
  • Plain background. White paper is ideal.
  • Three-quarter view. Seeing two sides plus the top gives the generator depth cues that a straight-on view hides.
  • Clear lines. Rough is fine, and you don't need to shade or colour it, though colour helps if you want the texture to follow it.
  • Your own image, or one you have rights to. Roblox holds you responsible for what you upload (are AI models allowed on Roblox?).

Drawing to Studio, step by step

  1. Draw or photograph the object on plain paper.
  2. Generate with an image-to-3D or sketch-to-3D tool. Try two or three times and keep the best silhouette.
  3. Reduce well under 20,000 triangles with retopology. The back of the model, which the generator invented, often needs the most clean-up.
  4. Check UVs, one material, and that it stands upright.
  5. Export .glb (easiest), .fbx or .obj.
  6. Import with File ⟩ Import, scale it against a character, and set collision.

The longer version of steps 2–6 is how to make Roblox models with AI.

Inside Studio

Studio's Assistant can also generate a mesh from a reference image with /generate_mesh, using text or an image, not both (Assistant guide). There are community plugins for it too. Use an external generator when you want to review the model, keep the files, or use them outside Roblox.

Sketch it in Vi3W

Vi3W takes sketches and photos as input. You can draw straight in the browser or upload a picture, and you get a textured mesh retopologised to low poly, exported as GLB, FBX or OBJ for Studio's Importer. Turn your drawing into a model.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a flat image into a 3D model?

It depends on what you want. For a flat shape with thickness, like a logo, a sign or a map outline, trace it. Convert the image to SVG, import the curves into Blender, convert them to a mesh and extrude. For a full 3D object from a drawing or photo, use an image-to-3D generator, which infers the depth and back side. Either way, keep the result under 20,000 triangles before importing to Studio.
