Quick answer

What is the Roblox Studio MCP server?

It's a Model Context Protocol server built into Roblox Studio. Once you enable it, an AI client on the same computer, such as Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or Codex, can read your open place, edit instances and scripts, run Luau, insert Creator Store assets and start or stop playtests.

Built-in, not a separate download

Roblox first released the Studio MCP server as an open-source project in May 2025. In March 2026 it moved into Studio itself, and the open-source repository is now archived. Roblox recommends the built-in server, whose tools stay in sync with Assistant without manual updates.

If you installed the old server, a Studio plugin called "MCP" plus a separate binary, you can remove it once the built-in server is working.

Turn it on

From Roblox's setup guide:

  1. Update Roblox Studio to the latest version.
  2. Open Assistant.
  3. Click … ⟩ Manage MCP Servers.
  4. Turn on Enable Studio as MCP server.

The panel then shows connection options. When a client connects, a green indicator shows how many are connected.

Connect your client

Quick connect

Supported clients appear in a Quick connect dropdown in the same panel: Antigravity, Codex CLI, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, Gemini CLI and Visual Studio Code. Turn yours on. If it isn't listed, install it and restart Studio.

JSON configuration

For clients configured with an mcpServers file, add an entry named Roblox_Studio whose command is Studio's bundled server:

  • macOS: /Applications/RobloxStudio.app/Contents/MacOS/StudioMCP
  • Windows: cmd.exe with the arguments /c and %LOCALAPPDATA%\Roblox\mcp.bat

If you already have other servers, add this as one more key, and mind the commas. A missing comma is the most common reason the file fails to load.

CLI command

Clients that add servers by command take the same path. In Claude Code on macOS, that looks like claude mcp add Roblox_Studio -- /Applications/RobloxStudio.app/Contents/MacOS/StudioMCP. The server uses stdio transport.

Or use Roblox's Claude plugin

Roblox's official Roblox Studio plugin for Claude Code and the Claude desktop app wraps this setup. In Claude Code, run /plugin, search for Roblox Studio and install it. You still switch the server on in Studio yourself.

Check it works

In Studio, the MCP panel should show the green connected indicator. Then ask your agent something read-only, for example "List what's in Workspace". On a fresh Baseplate it should describe the Camera, Terrain, Baseplate and SpawnLocation.

Several Studio windows

One client can drive several running Studio instances. Each tool call carries a studio_id, and list_roblox_studios lists the connected instances with their place IDs, so an agent can target the right one.

When it doesn't connect

  • Restart both Studio and the client. Claude Desktop can hide in the system tray, so quit it fully.
  • Check that the binary path exists on your machine.
  • Validate the JSON. One stray bracket stops the whole file loading.

Safety

MCP clients can read and modify your open places. Connect only clients you trust, review what the agent proposes, and commit to Git before large changes. Roblox's coding harness guide sets this up with Script Sync and Git from the start.

Next: what to build with it

The MCP server makes Claude a capable Studio scripter. The assets are a separate job. Build Roblox games with Claude covers the full split, and how to make Roblox models with AI covers making custom meshes.
