Quick answer

Can you make Roblox UGC accessories with AI?

Yes, for the mesh and texture, if the result meets Roblox's rigid accessory rules: a single mesh of at most 4,000 triangles, watertight, within the size box for its type, textures no larger than 2048 pixels for the Marketplace, and a correctly named attachment. You must own the rights, and it passes the same moderation.

Start with the right kind of accessory

Roblox has two kinds of accessory, and AI suits one much better than the other:

  • Rigid accessories (hats, hair, back items, shoulder pets, face items) are single static meshes attached to a point on the body. This is where AI generation helps most.
  • Layered accessories (clothing that wraps and stretches over the body) need inner and outer cage meshes and skinning. A generator gives you a starting shape at best, and the cages are manual work in Blender.

This guide is about rigid accessories.

The specs your mesh has to meet

From Roblox's rigid accessory specifications:

  • Single mesh. Merge everything into one object before export.
  • At most 4,000 triangles. That's a fifth of the general 20,000 limit (Roblox triangle limit).
  • Watertight, no backfaces, quads where possible and no faces with five or more sides.
  • Inside the size box for its type and body scale. A hat for the Normal body scale, for example, can be at most 1.87 × 2.5 × 1.87 studs.
  • Textures no larger than 2048×2048 for Marketplace items.
  • One attachment with the right name: HatAttachment, HairAttachment, BodyBackAttachment and so on. Studio's Accessory Fitting Tool adds it for you.

Fail any of these and validation will reject the upload. Roblox's validation errors page lists the messages and fixes.

Workflow: AI mesh to accessory

  1. Generate the item on its own: "a purple top hat with a gold band, single object". Leave out the head and character, and don't name brands.
  2. Reduce to the budget. Retopologise to well under 4,000 triangles. Hats and hair are where dense AI meshes hurt most. See low-poly models for Roblox.
  3. Check it's watertight and one mesh, with one texture set at 2048 or less.
  4. Export .fbx or .glb and import with the Importer's Rig Scale set to match your target body scale (Rthro for Normal, Rthro Narrow for Slender, Default for Classic).
  5. Fit it with the Accessory Fitting Tool on a mannequin, inside the size box.
  6. Validate and upload through Studio. Marketplace selling has its own account requirements, so check Roblox's current rules before you plan a launch.

Rights and moderation

Roblox's position on generative AI is that you're responsible for what you upload, however it was made. Don't prompt with brand names, existing characters or real people. Review every output before upload. AI-made items go through the same moderation as anything else. More in are AI models allowed on Roblox?

Generate the base mesh

Vi3W suits step 1 and part of step 2. Sketch the silhouette of the hat or back item, or describe it, get a textured mesh retopologised to low poly, and export FBX or GLB for fitting. Check the triangle count against the 4,000 budget before you import. Attachment, fitting and validation happen in Studio. Sketch your first accessory in Vi3W.

Frequently asked questions

Can I publish UGC made by AI?

Nothing in Roblox's rules bans AI-made assets. What Roblox requires is that you have the rights to what you upload and that it meets Community Standards and the technical specs. In practice, an AI mesh is a starting point: you'll usually need to reduce it to the 4,000-triangle accessory budget, fit it to the mannequin and check it with the Accessory Fitting Tool. Don't prompt with brand names or existing characters.
