AI-generated models on MakerWorld and Printables: the rules before you upload

MakerWorld's AIGC tag, the no-AI-thumbnail rule, crowdfunding limits and Printables' labelling. What to do so your AI model listing stays up.

Quick answer

Can you upload AI-generated 3D models to MakerWorld or Printables?

Yes, with conditions. MakerWorld asks you to tag mostly AI-made models as AIGC, bans AI-generated images as the cover picture, and keeps AI-reliant designs out of crowdfunding. Printables also expects AI models to be labelled. On both, show a photo of a real print. Untagged or misleading listings can be hidden or removed.

Why the sites added rules

In 2024 and 2025 both sites saw a wave of AI-generated listings, many with glossy AI renders that didn't match what actually printed. Users complained on the Bambu Lab forum and the Prusa forum, and both sites responded. The rules target misleading listings, not AI itself.

These policies change. Check the current text before you upload: we summarise them as of November 2026.

MakerWorld

From Bambu Lab's MakerWorld AI policy and crowdfunding AI policy:

  • Tag it. Models made primarily or entirely with AI should be tagged AIGC. MakerWorld also labels content it detects as substantially AI-made, and wrong labels can lower a model's visibility or get it removed.
  • No AI images as the cover. Model pictures should show the real thing. A photo of your print is strongly recommended.
  • No copying through AI. Generating a model from someone else's proprietary design is treated like copying it.
  • Crowdfunding campaigns that rely mainly on AI-generated models, with little human creative input, are not approved.

Printables

Printables expects AI-generated models to be labelled as such, so people can filter them, and its community expects a photo of a real print. If you're entering a contest, read that contest's rules. Some have excluded AI models.

A listing that stays up

  1. Print it first. Then photograph the print. This alone separates you from most AI listings.
  2. Tag it honestly as AI-generated, and say in the description what you did by hand: cleanup, a base, supports, splitting into parts.
  3. Make it printable: watertight, sensible wall thickness, flat base. Make an AI model watertight.
  4. Include a 3MF with your tested settings, especially on MakerWorld.
  5. Only use inputs you have rights to: your own sketch, your own photo, not a screenshot of someone else's character.

Where Vi3W fits

Vi3W gets you from a sketch or photo to a mesh, exported as OBJ for your slicer. The work that makes a listing worth downloading (printing, fixing, photographing) is still yours, and that's what the rules reward.

Try it

Make a model in Vi3W from your own drawing, print it, and upload it with the photo.
