How to open an FBX file without Maya or 3ds Max
Open FBX files free with Blender, Autodesk FBX Review or a browser viewer. Why some viewers skip FBX, and how to convert it to GLB when you need to.

Quick answer
How do I open an FBX file for free?
Use Blender, which is free and imports FBX through File, Import, FBX. To just look at the model or its animation, Autodesk's free FBX Review opens FBX on Windows and macOS, and the open-source Online 3D Viewer opens it in a browser. Mac Preview and Babylon.js Sandbox do not list FBX, so convert first.
Why FBX is awkward to open
FBX was created for Kaydara's Filmbox and has been owned by Autodesk since
- It carries a lot: meshes, materials, skeletons, skinning, animation takes, cameras and lights. That is why game engines and animation tools use it. It is also a proprietary format, read through Autodesk's SDK or through reverse-engineered importers. Many lightweight viewers simply leave it out. Mac Preview and Babylon.js Sandbox both skip it.
So for FBX, pick a tool that reads it well, rather than the nearest viewer.
Blender: the free all-rounder
Blender opens FBX through File › Import › FBX (.fbx). The Blender 5.2 manual describes a new importer built to be fast and compatible with modern and older FBX files. The previous add-on is still there as FBX (Legacy) if a file misbehaves. Each animation take becomes its own Action, so you can scrub through animations as well as look at the mesh.
Two settings are worth knowing:
- Scale. FBX files from Maya and 3ds Max often use centimetres. If the model arrives a hundred times too big, set the import scale to 0.01.
- Ignore Leaf Bones. Some exporters add an extra bone at the end of each chain. Turn this on for a cleaner skeleton.
Autodesk FBX Review: view only
If you want to look rather than edit, Autodesk offers FBX Review as a free download. It is small, opens FBX quickly and plays animations. It is the closest thing to a default FBX viewer.
Online 3D Viewer: in the browser
Online 3D Viewer lists FBX among its import formats and can export the model as glTF, OBJ or STL. It is the fastest way to turn an FBX into something the rest of your tools can read, without installing anything.
Open FBX in a game engine
FBX is native to the two big engines:
- Unity imports
.fbxwhen you drop it into the Assets folder. Our Unity guide covers scale and the LOD naming that builds LOD Groups automatically. - Unreal Engine imports FBX through the Content Browser. See the Unreal guide.
- Godot can import FBX too, but glTF is its preferred format. See the Godot guide.
Should you convert FBX to GLB?
If the model is going to the web, an Android AR viewer, a Mac or someone without a 3D package, yes. GLB is one file, an open standard, and opens nearly everywhere. Keep FBX if the model has a rig and animation going into Unity or Unreal, where FBX is still the most reliable path. The glTF vs FBX comparison goes into the trade-offs.
Vi3W exports generated models as FBX, GLB or OBJ, so you can choose the format for where the model is going instead of converting later.
