How to draw a sketch that AI turns into a good 3D model
Line weight, views, silhouettes and labels: what makes a sketch convert cleanly to 3D, with before-and-after fixes for common mistakes.

Quick answer
How should you draw a sketch for AI 3D generation?
Draw one object, large and centred, with a closed outline and confident lines. Use a three-quarter or side view so depth is visible, add light shading to show which surfaces curve, and leave the background empty. Label the object in a few words. Draw any side the generator can't see if that side matters.
The generator reads shapes, not intentions
When you show a friend a scribble of a teapot, they fill the gaps from memory. A sketch-to-3D generator does something similar but cruder: it infers a solid shape from the lines it can see, and it guesses everything else. Your job is to leave it fewer guesses. None of the advice below needs drawing skill. A clear, ugly sketch beats a beautiful, ambiguous one.
1. One object, big, in the middle
Draw a single object and let it fill most of the page. Small sketches in a corner lose detail when the image is scaled, and several objects on one page tend to come back fused together, because the generator makes one mesh per run.
If you need a table and four chairs, sketch the table and one chair separately.
2. Close the outline
The silhouette is the strongest signal you give. Gaps in the outline (where the pencil skipped, or where you trailed off at the bottom of a vase) make it unclear where the object ends. Go over the outer edge once with a firmer line. Inner details can stay light.
3. Choose a view that shows depth
A straight-on front view is the hardest input: it says nothing about thickness. A three-quarter view (turned about 30–45° from the front) shows two faces and their relationship, so depth is visible. A side view is best for objects whose profile is the design, like a car, a shoe or a sword.
For objects where both matter, draw both. Front and side view drawings covers how rough a second view can be.
4. Add a little shading
Line art tells the generator the outline. Shading tells it which way surfaces face. You don't need rendering, just a few hatch strokes on the side away from your light and a darker band where a surface curves under. Two minutes of shading usually fixes "the model came out flat".
Line art vs shaded sketch compares the two in more detail.
5. Leave out what isn't the object
- No ground shadows. A scribbled shadow under a chair can become a slab.
- No notes or arrows on the drawing. Put them in the text description instead.
- No construction lines you can't erase. Faint perspective guides are fine; heavy ones get read as edges.
- No background. A blank page is the ideal background.
6. Say what it is
Most sketch-to-3D tools, Vi3W included, take a short description with the sketch. Use it for things a drawing can't say: "wooden barrel with iron bands", "glass bottle", "stylised, chunky proportions". Material words help the most, because a pencil line looks the same whether it means wood, metal or fabric.
Keep it short. A long prompt can override your drawing, and the drawing is the point.
7. Draw the side you care about
A sketch shows one side. The generator invents the rest. If the back of your object has something specific, such as a backpack's straps or the handle on the far side of a mug, draw it, even as a small second sketch.
A quick before-and-after checklist
Before you upload, check:
- Is there exactly one object?
- Is the outline closed and firm?
- Can you tell how deep it is?
- Is there some shading on the turned-away sides?
- Is the page otherwise empty?
- Have you written two to six words about what it is and what it's made of?
Photographing a paper sketch
Phone photos work. Shoot straight down so the page isn't skewed, in even daylight, with no hand shadow. Crop to the drawing. If the paper is yellowish or lined, raising contrast in your phone's editor helps.
What happens after you upload
In Vi3W the sketch becomes a full-colour image first, so you can see how your lines were read before anything turns 3D. If the image is wrong, that's your cue to adjust the sketch or the description, not to start modelling. The sketch-to-3D page walks through all four steps.

Frequently asked questions
how to sketch 3d model
Draw the object as a form, not an outline: pick a view that shows two sides at once, keep the silhouette closed, and add light shading on the surfaces that turn away from you. For an AI generator, one object per page and a plain background matter more than drawing skill.
