Free 3D models for Unity
The Unity Asset Store's free section and CC0 libraries: where to get free 3D models for Unity, and how to import them cleanly.

Quick answer
Where can you get free 3D models for Unity?
The Unity Asset Store has a large free section that imports directly into your project. CC0 libraries such as Kenney, Quaternius and Poly Haven add free models usable in any engine, and Sketchfab, itch.io and OpenGameArt have more with per-asset licences. Prefer FBX, which Unity calls best practice, or GLB with Unity's glTFast package.
Start with the Unity Asset Store
The Asset Store's free section is the most convenient source: assets install through the Package Manager straight into your project, often as prefabs with materials set up. Filter by price (free) and category (3D). Things to check on each listing:
- Render pipeline: Built-in, URP or HDRP. Materials made for one look pink in another until converted.
- Unity version supported.
- Licence: the Asset Store's standard licence generally allows use in your Unity projects, including commercial games, but not redistributing the raw assets. Read the listing.
CC0 libraries
Usable in Unity and anywhere else, for commercial games, without credit:
- Kenney: stylised kits, CC0 per kenney.nl. Many come with FBX.
- Quaternius: low poly packs, many with FBX and animations; widely distributed as CC0.
- Poly Haven: realistic models, textures and HDRIs, CC0.
Per-asset licence sites
- Sketchfab: filter by downloadable and licence.
- itch.io: many free packs, creator licences.
- OpenGameArt: community library, check each asset.
Formats for Unity
Unity's manual says it "uses the .fbx file format as its internal importing chain" and calls FBX best practice. It also reads OBJ, DAE and DXF. For GLB, install the glTFast package. Best 3D model format for Unity has the details.
Importing free models cleanly
- Put each asset in its own folder under Assets.
- Select the model and check the Model tab: Scale Factor, Convert Units.
- Materials tab: extract materials and textures if you want to edit them.
- Check render pipeline; upgrade materials to URP or HDRP if needed.
- Make a prefab with colliders and any components.
- Test next to a 1 m cube for scale.
Pink or blank materials? See textures missing after import.
Free characters and animation
- Mixamo: free with an Adobe ID; Adobe's FAQ says characters and animations can be used royalty-free in personal and commercial projects. Its auto-rigger is for bipedal humanoids.
- Quaternius character packs, some animated.

When nothing fits
Free assets save time until you need one specific prop in your style. That's when generating is faster: Vi3W exports FBX for Unity, with the model retopologised. The Unity integration guide covers the import.
Missing a prop? Generate it in Vi3W and export FBX.
