Quick answer

Where can you get free 3D models for Godot?

CC0 libraries work best: Kenney and Quaternius offer free low poly game packs, often in glTF or FBX, and Poly Haven offers realistic models and textures. Sketchfab, itch.io and OpenGameArt have more with per-asset licences. Download GLB or glTF where offered, since Godot's docs recommend glTF 2.0, and FBX imports natively from Godot 4.3.

Pick the right format first

Godot's documentation recommends glTF 2.0 (.glb or .gltf) for 3D scenes. FBX files added in Godot 4.3 or later import through the built-in ufbx importer. OBJ works for simple static meshes but drops PBR materials. So when a free pack offers several formats, choose GLB or glTF first, then FBX. Best 3D model format for Godot explains why.

Free sources that suit Godot

Kenney

CC0 (kenney.nl/support), consistent stylised art, many 3D kits (city, nature, castle, space, racing, furniture). Several kits include glTF or GLB. A favourite for Godot jam games and prototypes.

Quaternius

Low poly packs widely distributed as CC0, many in GLB/glTF and FBX, including animated characters. Check each pack's page.

Poly Haven

CC0 (polyhaven.com/license) realistic models, PBR textures and HDRIs. Models are available as glTF and other formats. The HDRIs are excellent for Godot's WorldEnvironment sky.

Sketchfab, itch.io, OpenGameArt

Large libraries with per-asset licences. Sketchfab can convert models to glTF on download. Filter by licence and avoid non-commercial ones if you plan to sell your game.

Importing free models into Godot 4

  1. Copy the GLB or glTF (with its textures, if separate) into your project.
  2. Godot imports it automatically. Double-click for Advanced Import Settings.
  3. Physics: add collision shapes per mesh.
  4. Meshes: enable LOD generation if the model is dense.
  5. Materials: extract them if you want to edit or share them across models.
  6. Right-click › New Inherited Scene to add nodes without touching the source.

Common issues

  • Wrong scale: check against a 1 m box; fix in Blender or the import scale.
  • Missing textures with .gltf: the .bin and image files didn't come along. Prefer .glb.
  • FBX from an older Godot project still using FBX2glTF: switch its importer to ufbx.
  • Mixed styles: packs from different artists clash; see where to find free game assets for tips.

When the free model doesn't exist

For a specific prop in your game's style that no pack includes, generating it can be quicker than searching. Vi3W exports GLB, which Vi3W's own format guide lists as best for Godot, and retopologises every model. How to make 3D assets for Godot covers generating and modelling. The Godot integration guide covers Vi3W imports specifically.
