Blender to Roblox Studio: export settings that get scale, axes and textures right

Export from Blender to Roblox Studio without scale, axis or texture problems: GLB and FBX settings, Importer settings, and going back from Studio to Blender.

Quick answer

How do you get a model from Blender into Roblox Studio?

Select the object in Blender and export it as glTF Binary (.glb), or as FBX with Apply Scalings set to FBX Unit Scale and textures embedded. Use Z Forward and Y Up. In Studio choose File ⟩ Import, set World Forward to Front, World Up to Top and Scale Unit to Stud, then import.

Set Blender up once

Roblox's Blender guide recommends setting Scene Properties ⟩ Units ⟩ Unit System to None and Rotation to Degrees, so one Blender unit is one stud. If you'd rather model in metres, keep metric and set the Importer's Scale Unit to Meter. Since June 2026 that converts at 1 stud = 28 cm (studs to metres).

Before exporting, also check the model against Roblox's mesh specifications: under 20,000 triangles per object (Overlays ⟩ Statistics shows the count), watertight, one material per mesh. And apply transforms with Ctrl+A ⟩ All Transforms, which avoids surprises on rotation and scale.

Export settings

glTF Binary (.glb), the easiest for props

File ⟩ Export ⟩ glTF 2.0, then:

  • Include ⟩ Limit to Selected Objects on;
  • Transform: Forward Z Forward, Up Y Up;
  • Format: glTF Binary (.glb), which packs textures into the file.

Roblox notes that glTF doesn't need the FBX scaling configuration (Blender guide).

FBX, for rigs and animation

File ⟩ Export ⟩ FBX, then, per Roblox's export settings:

  • Limit to Selected Objects on;
  • Transform ⟩ Apply Scalings: FBX Unit Scale, with other scales at 1.0. This is the fix for giant imports;
  • Forward Z Forward, Up Y Up;
  • Path Mode: Copy and Embed Textures on;
  • Armature ⟩ Add Leaf Bones off;
  • Bake Animation off, unless the file carries an animation.

Import settings in Studio

File ⟩ Import, choose the file, then in the preview:

  • File Transform: World Forward Front, World Up Top;
  • File Geometry: Scale Unit Stud, or Meter if you modelled in metres;
  • Insert Using Scene Position on if you want it where you placed it in Blender.

How to import 3D models into Roblox Studio covers the rest of the Importer.

Going the other way: Studio to Blender

Right-click a model in Studio and choose Export Selection to save an .obj. Then in Blender, File ⟩ Import ⟩ Wavefront (.obj) with Scale 1, Forward Axis Z and Up Axis Y. Parts keep their world positions, so use Set Origin ⟩ Geometry to Origin to find it. This is how you turn a Part build into a single mesh, or model an accessory around an exported character.

Shapes you'd rather not model

Blender is where you fix, rig and fine-tune. It doesn't have to be where every shape starts. For props you'd model from primitives anyway, Vi3W generates a textured, retopologised base from a prompt, photo or sketch. You download GLB, FBX or OBJ, refine in Blender if you want, and export with the settings above. See also Vi3W with Blender. Generate a base mesh free.

Frequently asked questions

Exporting Selection and Importing into Blender

If the model seems to be missing after import, it's probably far from the origin. Studio's Export Selection keeps each part's in-game position. In Blender, select the imported object and use Object ⟩ Set Origin ⟩ Geometry to Origin, or move it to 0,0,0, and it'll be in front of you. When you import from Studio, Roblox's guide suggests Scale 1, Forward Axis Z and Up Axis Y.
