Quick answer

What can you use instead of Blender on an iPad?

Nomad Sculpt is the most popular choice for sculpting characters and creatures. Shapr3D suits precise CAD-style modelling. Procreate paints imported 3D models but doesn't build them. Browser tools, including AI 3D generators, can make models through Safari. Export as OBJ, GLB or STL to move models to a computer, a game engine or a printer.

The situation

The iPad is a great drawing and sculpting device, but the desktop 3D tools most tutorials use, Blender included, aren't standard iPad apps. Check blender.org for the current status of Blender on tablets. In the meantime, iPad 3D work happens in dedicated apps and in the browser.

Sculpting: Nomad Sculpt

  • The best-known iPad sculpting app, also on Android.
  • Digital clay with a stylus: characters, creatures, organic props.
  • Painting, lighting and export (including OBJ, glTF and STL).
  • Good for: organic models, figures, sculpt-for-print.
  • Less good for: precise hard-surface modelling and full game pipelines (UVs, rigging).

CAD-style modelling: Shapr3D

  • Precise, dimension-driven modelling with Apple Pencil.
  • Good for: product design, parts, 3D printing functional objects.
  • Less good for: organic or artistic models.
  • Free tier with limits; check current plans.

Painting models: Procreate

Procreate paints imported 3D models (OBJ, USDZ) but doesn't build them. It's a great finishing tool. From Procreate sketch to 3D model shows how to go from a Procreate drawing to a model and back.

In the browser: AI generators and web modellers

Safari gives you access to browser 3D tools without installing anything:

  • Web modellers such as Tinkercad (simple shapes) and Spline (web design).
  • AI 3D generators: draw in Procreate or any app, then upload the sketch or a photo and get a textured model. Generation happens on the provider's servers, so the iPad's processor isn't the limit.

Viewing models

The iPad can view USDZ files in AR Quick Look natively, and many apps open GLB. How to view 3D models on a phone covers options that also work on iPad.

Getting models off the iPad

  • To a computer for Blender: export OBJ or glTF/GLB from your app and transfer via Files, AirDrop or cloud storage.
  • To a game engine: GLB (Godot, web) or FBX (Unity, Unreal). Many iPad apps export OBJ or GLB; convert to FBX on a computer if needed.
  • To a printer: STL or OBJ.

Which should you use?

  • Characters and creatures: Nomad Sculpt.
  • Precise parts: Shapr3D.
  • Painting a model: Procreate.
  • A textured model from your drawing, fast: an AI generator in Safari.
  • Learning full 3D modelling: Blender on a computer, eventually.

Frequently asked questions

how to make low poly models on ipad

Sculpting apps such as Nomad Sculpt can make low poly models by starting from low-resolution primitives and using flat shading, or by decimating a sculpt. For game-ready low poly, many artists sculpt on the iPad and reduce or retopologise on a computer.
