Tinkercad import: bring an AI 3D model in, add a base or text, and print it

Import STL or OBJ into Tinkercad (25 MB limit), shrink dense AI meshes first, then add a base, a name or a hole and export for printing.

Quick answer

How do you import a 3D model into Tinkercad?

Click Import in the Tinkercad editor and choose an STL or OBJ file, or an SVG for flat shapes. Files must be under 25 MB, and very dense meshes can fail even below that, so reduce the triangle count first. The model arrives as one solid shape you can resize, combine with text or a base, or cut holes into.

Why this combination works

Tinkercad is the easiest 3D tool there is, and it's in a browser. But you can't make a dragon out of cubes. An AI generator can make the dragon, but it can't add a hole for a keyring or "EMMA" on the base in a precise font. Together they cover a lot of classroom and gift projects.

What Tinkercad accepts

  • STL and OBJ for 3D shapes.
  • SVG for flat shapes you then extrude.
  • 25 MB maximum file size, as listed in university library guides to Tinkercad (for example Boise State's MakerLab).

Tinkercad ignores textures and colours. Your model arrives as one solid colour you choose.

Step 1: Make the mesh small enough

AI-generated meshes are often dense. Even under 25 MB, a heavy mesh can be slow or fail to import. Reduce it first:

  • In Blender: add a Decimate modifier, set the ratio to about 0.3, apply, export OBJ or STL. Decimate vs retopology.
  • Vi3W retopologises before export, so its OBJ files are lighter than raw generator output.

Step 2: Import

  1. Open a design and click Import (top right).
  2. Choose the file. Leave units at millimetres.
  3. If it arrives tiny or huge, set the scale in the import dialog, or drag the corner handles holding Shift to keep proportions. Scale a model for printing.

Step 3: Make it yours

  • A flat base: drag in a cylinder, flatten it, place it under the model, select both, and Group (Ctrl+G).
  • A name: drag in Text, type it, sink it slightly into the base, and group.
  • A keyring hole: drag in a Hole cylinder where you want it, and group.
  • Cut the bottom flat: place a hole box under the model so its bottom is sliced off. Flat bottoms print without supports.

Step 4: Export for printing

Export › .STL for most slicers, or .OBJ. Then check it in your slicer. If the AI mesh had holes, grouping in Tinkercad can fail or look odd: make an AI model watertight first.

A good first project

A child draws an animal. Turn the drawing into a model (kids' drawing to 3D), import it here, add their name on the base, print it.

Try it

Make the model in Vi3W, export OBJ, and import it into Tinkercad.
