3D head model from a photo: AI, scanning, or sculpting a face

Make a 3D head or face model from a photo with AI, a phone scan or sculpting. Which gives a real likeness, and which suits busts or games.

Quick answer

Can you make a 3D model of a head from a photo?

Yes. An AI image-to-3D tool can build a textured head from one front-facing photo, which works well for stylised busts and figurines but only approximates a true likeness. For an accurate face, scan it with photogrammetry or a phone depth camera. For a game character's head, sculpt or retopologise so it can animate.

Why faces are the hardest case

People forgive a lumpy chair. They don't forgive a face that's slightly wrong. And from a single photo, the depth of a nose, the shape of the back of the head and the line of the jaw in profile are all guesses. That's the honest limit of every single-image method.

Three routes

AI from one photo

Upload a well-lit, front-facing photo and generate. You get a textured head, or head and shoulders.

  • Good for: stylised busts, figurines, game NPCs where likeness is loose, and a fast base to sculpt over.
  • Weak at: a true likeness from the side, ears, hair detail, the back of the head.

Better input means a better result: even light with no harsh shadows, a neutral expression, hair away from the face, a plain background. Best photos for image to 3D. If you can add a profile photo, use it as a second view: multi-view image to 3D.

Scan a real head

Photogrammetry (dozens of photos taken walking around a still person) or a phone's depth camera captures the real shape. Much more accurate, messier mesh, and it needs the person there and still. Photogrammetry vs AI image to 3D.

Sculpt it

For a lead character, artists sculpt in Blender or ZBrush, often starting from an AI or scan base. Image to 3D as a sculpting base shows how to use a generated head as clay.

For animation, topology matters most

A face animates around the eyes and mouth. That needs edge loops around them, which no raw scan or raw AI mesh has. Vi3W retopologises automatically, which gives a cleaner start, though faces for close-up animation still benefit from hand-made loops. Topology for animation.

Stylised is the sweet spot

AI image-to-3D does best when you ask for a stylised version: a cartoon bust, a chibi figurine, a game-style head. Make a stylised image of the photo first, then convert it. Stylised 3D character with AI.

Only model faces you have the right to use: your own, or with the person's permission. Selling likenesses of real people without consent is a legal risk in most places.

Try it

Upload a front-facing photo to Vi3W and see how close the first pass gets.
